Third Culture Kids – a term that is now starting to find its way to Sweden, but has been used around the world for several decades. The first to use the term was sociologist Ruth Hill Useem, who back in the 1950s explained that TCKs are \u201cChildren who accompany their parents to another culture.\u201d The term TCKs spread not least through the book written by David C. Pollock and Ruth E. Van Reken in 1999 \u201cThird Culture Kids – Growing Up Among Worlds\u201d, which was published in a new edition in 2017. Their explanation of Third Culture Kids (TCK) is: \u201cA TCK is a person who has spent a substantial part of their childhood in a culture other than that of their parents. A TCK is part of several cultures, but does not belong entirely to any one culture. Although there are elements of several cultures in the person’s life experience, the person’s belonging is primarily in relationships with others of similar background.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>I myself am a TCK who had the privilege of living part of my childhood in the Congo, and my children are TCKs who have lived part of their lives in Thailand. Over the last 20 years I have met many TCKs from and in different countries, with different experiences, but all with the common experience of not quite belonging anywhere, and at the same time belonging in many places. Some TCKs live their whole lives in one place, but have parents from another culture, some TCKs move between cultures many times during their childhood. Belonging to many cultures affects development, identity and basic ideas about the world and myself. Moving between countries means constantly adapting to new conditions, ways of life, languages and ways of being. It can bring both a stress and a richness to life. <\/p>\n

Third Culture Kids has always existed. But we haven’t always had a name. Now we live in a world where more and more children are growing up as TCKs. It is a richness and a gift to the world. It’s a way of living and building bridges. <\/p>\n

Over the years, I have lectured about TCKs in various contexts around the world, held workshops for TCKs and talked to TCKs – children, teenagers and adults. I have collaborated with Ruth van Reken, one of the authors of the first book on TCKs. Each semester, I offer a three-part webinar series for those who are parents of or work with TCKs. I can also put you in touch with meetings for TCKs. I am also happy to talk to TCKs who want to explore how their upbringing has affected them, or to parents who want tips on how to support their TCKs. <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>In 2019, my book \u201cThird Culture Kids: A Gift to Care For\u201d was published, bringing together my knowledge of TCKs and their needs, reflective questions for parents and employers, and activities that families can do together to process their experiences.<\/p>\n

My knowledge and experience of TCK has given me a cultural competence that I often benefit from in different contexts, for example when I am supervising.<\/p>\n
