To help understand what the brain looks like and how the different parts need to be connected, you can think of the brain as a hand.<\/p>\n
The wrist and the lower part of your palm are the reaction brain, which is connected to the spine and spinal cord (which in the picture is your arm). If you bend your thumb into the palm of your hand, you can imagine that the thumb is the emotional brain. It is located in the center of the brain. If you then bend your other fingers over the thumb, you will see the thinking brain. When all three parts are connected, like when your hand is clenched, they are in contact with each other. The emotional brain connects the three parts of the brain by taking in signals from both the reaction brain and the thought brain and using these signals to create feelings that lead to activity, which means we get our needs met and feel good. <\/p>\n
The reaction brain consists of the brain stem and cerebellum and is sometimes called the reptilian brain. It takes in sensations and signals from the body and external signals and reacts to them. <\/p>\n
The emotional brain is made up of the limbic system and is sometimes called the mammalian brain. It creates feelings from impressions. <\/p>\n
The thought brain is made up of the cerebral cortex and the frontal lobe. It creates thoughts based on emotions. <\/p>\n
When all parts of the brain are connected, we feel good and we can use what Joseph LeDoux calls the high road, which is also a slow road. When your hand is clenched and your fingers are wrapped around your thumb, you understand how the high road works: all impressions can be processed by both the emotional brain and the thinking brain, which then tells the reaction brain what reactions to trigger. We can take in what we feel and think of possibilities and choices for action. <\/p>\n

When we are exposed to an event that traumatizes us, the different parts of the brain become disconnected, for a shorter or longer period of time. In the picture of our hand, it looks like the fingers have gone up and the thumb has gone out. First, the thinking brain disconnects so we can’t think. If we get even more stressed or scared, the emotional brain also shuts down. The thinking brain can’t communicate its thoughts to the feeling brain, which can’t communicate feelings to the thinking brain either. Then only the reaction brain works. It pumps out signals to the emotional brain and the thinking brain, which they cannot process. <\/p>\n
